MRSA infections are fairly common in the hospitalized patients.
Treatment of MRSA Skin and Soft Tissue Infections
Common Medications Used:
PO Medications: Clindamycin for susceptible strains, TMP/SMX, Doxycycline. You can give these IV too.
IV medications: Vancomycin 20 mg/kg IV q 12h, Ceftaroline 600 mg IV q 12h, Daptomycin 4 mg/kg or 6 mg/kg
-Resistance to quinolones and Tetracyclines can develop on therapy, so don’t use them.
-Do not prescribe Rifampin by itself
-Mupirocin nasal ointment can be used to decrease nasal colonization but it is not commonly used or needed
-Nose picking can increase nasal MRSA
